Mustapha Ahmed has been fired as Ghana's sports minister

Dr. Mustapha Ahmed's disastrous reign as Ghana's sports minister has come to a screeching end after the country's leader His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama fired the dentist on Tuesday morning and replaced him ace sports broadcaster Hon. Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye.

Ghana's leading football news website Ghanasoccernet.com exclusively revealed the impending sacking of the incompetent minister exactly two weeks ago after several spats with athletes and sports administrators.

In a strategic move by President Mahama, the leader of the ruling NDC party is ridding his government of elements that will mar the chances of his government in the general elections in November.

The massive election-winning ministerial reshuffle rids the cash-burdened ministry of Dr Mustahpa who had no experience in sports which led to several embarrassing gaffes for the government in his eight months in charge.

His calamitous stay in the ministry was highlighted by the way the country's female national team the Black Queens was treated by his ministry after they won the Gold medal at the All Africa Games which brought embarrassment and shame to the Mahama government which prides itself with support for women.

President Mahama is making the last throw of the dice meant to secure him victory at the polls in December and to secure that he needs the most capable and popular hands to secure the much-needed win.

An embarrassing primaries defeat to a novice in the ruling party's stronghold of Nima, Mamobi and New Town has left Dr Mustapha severely bruised, painting the picture of an unpopular minister whose retention in the sports ministry was proving corrosive for the NDC party.

The NDC is also popular among the youth because of its sports policies but Dr. Mustapha's disastrous reign at the ministry with unending rows with footballers and athletes over bonuses as well as the desire to micro-manage some of the federations has also made him execrated.

The reshuffle of ministers is the President's last ahead of this year's general elections with Nii Lante seen as the most competent to steer sports to bring the much needed results for campaigning.

The former Sports Journalist of the Year award winner with several years of broadcasting with the state-owned GBC has deep knowledge and contacts in sports after his exploits is the sports industry as a journalist and administrator with top-flight side Liberty Professional.

Dr. Mustapha Ahmed was appointed a about eight months ago after Mahama Ayariga was then elevated to the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology.
