Exempting commercial vehicles from import duty can have several benefits for the economy and the transportation sector:

Cost savings for businesses: Exempting commercial vehicles from import duty reduces the overall cost of importing these vehicles, making them more affordable for businesses. This can lead to cost savings for businesses that rely on commercial vehicles for their operations.

Stimulate investment: By making commercial vehicles more affordable, exempting them from import duty can stimulate investment in the transportation sector. This can lead to the expansion of transportation services, the creation of new businesses, and job opportunities for individuals in the sector.

Improve access to transportation services: Lowering the cost of commercial vehicles can improve access to transportation services for individuals and businesses. This can help to address transportation challenges, improve mobility, and facilitate the movement of goods and people.

Boost economic growth: A thriving transportation sector is essential for economic growth as it facilitates trade, commerce, and connectivity. Exempting commercial vehicles from import duty can contribute to the growth of the transportation sector, which in turn can have a positive impact on the overall economy.

Enhance efficiency: By making commercial vehicles more affordable, businesses can upgrade their fleets, leading to improved efficiency in transportation operations. This can result in faster delivery times, reduced costs, and increased productivity.

In line with these, Former President John Mahama who is the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in this year's elections has proposed exempting commercial vehicles from import duty as part of his plan to support the transportation sector and boost economic growth when elected as president. This policy is aimed at reducing the cost of importing commercial vehicles, such as mini buses and buses; and making them more affordable for businesses and individuals in Ghana.

By exempting commercial vehicles from import duty, Mahama hopes to stimulate investment in the transportation sector, improve access to transportation services, and create job opportunities for Ghanaians. This policy is also expected to enhance the efficiency of the transportation industry, facilitate the movement of goods and people, and contribute to overall economic development in the country.
