Ghana: a wicked society?

Feature Article Ghana: a wicked society?
MON, 24 JUN 2024 LISTEN

From all blacks in Germany Ghanaians are the biggest group. Around 100.000 of them live in Germany out of which 40.000 live in Hamburg. Unlike other African countries, there is no civil war or war in Ghana or torture and other forms of political opponent harassment. Legal migration to foreign countries is based on 1.) political grounds 2.) short-term war periods 3.) foreign countries' invitation for highly qualified and needed professionals or 4.) for spouses to join their husbands and wives 5.) foreign investors to create wanted jobs in foreign lands or 6.) foreign students on exchange programs seen necessary to stay after graduation. To make it in Germany foreigners must learn German and excel in basic German language skills to avoid laboring in pity-pity jobs.

Unlike the USA where blacks are sidelined and seriously disadvantaged due to their history in the country and are often killed by police stopping them by the roadside and in the UK where their language is spoken racism in Germany against blacks, especially in big cities is rare. In big cities, everyone minds his own business; not so in Eastern parts of the country predominantly having mostly small cities of less than 100.000 citizens. Walking there at night for blacks is not advised. Even with all these challenges Ghanaians come to Germany in their numbers while other really troubled Africans prefer to stay back home, from Senegal, Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, Mali, Chad, Rwanda, Congo, Niger, Burkina Faso, South Africa to mention a few.

What makes Ghanaians that much different from other Africans? Their intellect, their history, their culture, their political system, or...let me speculate, their mentality?

Compared to other migrants like from Vietnam, Korea, Syria, Ukraine, etc. Ghanaian migrants are in their numbers not so ambitious to achieve academic, entrepreneurship, or economic excellence rather seem to be content with just financially to make it in Germany with only few to come out on top.

To label Ghana a "wicked" society is critical but in the historical light of forced migration as slaves now a volunteer migration based on the economic hardships under all Ghanaian governments regardless of the party in power is concerning. Problems must be solved where they occur not while resting in foreign territories. This pushes the right solutions onto the shoulders of innocent unborn generations.
