Presbyterian schools urged to reinforce Presbyterian discipline

Bawku (U/E), May 9, GNA - Reverend Emmanuel Atami, Board Chairman of the Northern Presbyterian Health Services, has called on Presbyterian schools in the country to revisit the Presbyterian discipline of instilling the fear of God in students.

He said the Presbyterian discipline such as respect, honesty, trust worthiness, and humility were fundamental requirements for the moulding of children to take up responsible roles in society.

Reverend Atami said when these values are put together, it would groom up children to become more responsible and proactive to the call to duty, adding that it would prepare the students academically.

He said this over the weekend while addressing a send-off ceremony held for Mr Emmanuel Abelko, former Principal of the Bawku Presbyterian Nursing Training College (PNTC), as he proceeds to retirement.

Reverend Atami said in the past, students who went through Presbyterian training, exhibited morally acceptable standards because they were imbued with God fearing teachings and so conformed to social order.

He said the cause of poor academic performance in the schools in recent times was as result of the absence of these elements of discipline and that to produce good and productive human resource for the country, there is the need for stakeholders to inculcate such training regimes into school activities.

Reverend Atami urged the students of the College to actualise the skills they have acquired as they would serve as guide to protect them from going wayward.

Mr Fred Effah-Yeboah, General Manager of the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital, described Mr Abelko as an ingenious hard working man who left an indelible mark in the Presbyterian Mission in Ghana.

He said Mr Abelko served the mission as a State Registered Nurse (SRN) in the Bawku hospital from 1976 until his retirement as a Principal for the Nursing Training College.

He said Mr Abelko served the mission with diligence, commitment and called on the students to see him as a role model and emulate his works.

Mr Effah-Yeboah urged the Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) to support the authorities bring the needed discipline into the educational institutions.
