Mayor of Kumasi urges public to foster sense of community ownership

The Mayor of Kumasi, Samuel Pyne, has called on the public to take ownership of the management of the environment by engaging in sustainable environmental practices.

He said for the quality of life of the citizens to improve, they must enhance waste management and foster a sense of community ownership.

Mr Pyne said this after the 30-month Holistic Reinforcement for Sustainable Development (HORESD).

The project is a transformative and significant contributor to sustainable development and environmental stewardship in Kumasi.

The initiative was European Union-funded and was launched by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in January 2022 to enhance the city's capacity to provide public services on waste management and recycling.

The Mayor urged stakeholders to build on the HORESD project's achievements, striving for sustainable development and environmental excellence in Kumasi.

He commended the dedication of the local project team, territorial management group, technical working group and community agents who worked tirelessly towards the project's success.

The Coordinating Director of KMA, Mr Francis Dwira-Darko, acknowledged that the project has improved sanitation conditions in Kumasi and urged other international bodies to explore opportunities in Kumasi to influence lives.

President of Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta (MANRA), Paqui Momparler expressed gratitude to the mayor, stakeholders and funding partners for their continuous support towards the successful execution of the HORESD project and hoped that the project would be sustained to make a meaningful impact on society.
