Electoral Commission chairperson, Jean Mensa has disclosed that the commission has put in place measures to ensure unpredictable electric power outages (dumsor) does not affect its planned Limited Voter Registration exercise.

The EC will commence this year’s limited voter registration exercise on Tuesday, May 7, ahead of the December 7 general elections.

Speaking at a press conference today, Jean Mensa anticipates the impact of ‘dumsor’ on the registration exercise.

She assured that the Electoral Commission has made arrangements to ensure the registration proceeds even when there is no power.

“We’ve made arrangements to ensure we don’t have challenges because of dumsor and what we’ve done is to have all our district officers rent generators so that in the event where there is dumsor that can kick in.

“However, should there be the unexpected, we would switch on to the offline and by offline it means that voters will be registered and their details would be put on a pen drive and then that would be copied at our offices when the light returns. So the registration would not be disrupted,” Jean Mensa assured.

In the Limited Registration exercise that will be concluded on May 27, the Electoral Commission is looking at registering 623,000 people.

The EC insists that should more people show up to register, it will do so.
