Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has insisted he was not required to inform President John Mahama before the dismissal of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo.

Addo, 50, was relieved of his duties in March following consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany in pre-World Cup matches, despite successfully guiding Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Adams made it clear the decision was taken within his mandate as sector minister.

“I don’t need to inform the President [John Mahama] before sacking coach Otto Addo," he said.

"He knows we are capable of doing the job; that’s why he appointed us to this position," the Buem MP added.

Following Addo’s exit, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) moved quickly to appoint experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz on a four-month contract.

Queiroz, who has previously managed Egypt, Iran and Colombia, was unveiled last week and is currently in Europe assessing potential Black Stars players ahead of the World Cup.

The veteran coach is expected to take charge of Ghana’s final phase of preparations, with friendly matches lined up against Mexico next month and Wales on June 2.

Ghana, four-time African champions, will make their fifth World Cup appearance this year after being drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and concluding their group stage fixtures against Croatia on June 27.
