Simon Ahomah an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service has been an assemblyman in the Baseke electoral area of the Ellembelle District from 2002 and is contesting again in the upcoming election.

The code of ethics that guides the security personnel under the PNDC law 226 of 1989 which established the Ghana Immigration Service under the Interior Ministry states in no uncertain terms ,that a security Officer is not allowed to contest ANY national election being organized by the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

This development is gradually building tension in the Baseke electoral area as the electoral commission seems not to regard a petition that has been sent to them on the matter.

In an interview on Westend radio with the electoral commissioner of the District, Mr. Emmanuel Aidoo says the law stated in the petition is under the Ministry of Interior and therefore not applicable to the EC.He went further to state that, the petition was presented rather late and will be difficult to act on since there has been a notice of poll.

All attempt to get a response from the Ghana Immigration Service has not been successful.

So we ask, who watches over the watchman? What measures are in place to check the conduct of security personnel who go against the code of ethics?

There is definitely a reason for this law and should not be overlooked. Our security services have to stand and enforce our laws.
