NPP's handling of petition against Ken Agyapong will test party's unity ahead of 2028 — Dr. Ampaabeng

Former Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Alex Ampaabeng has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to handle the petitions against former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong with caution.

Some members of the opposition party have filed a petition seeking the dismissal of the former flagbearer aspirant from the party over alleged anti-party conduct.

Following the receipt of the petition, the NPP has referred it to the National Disciplinary Committee to investigate the allegations.

The disciplinary committee, chaired by former Roads Minister Kwasi Amoako Atta, is expected to submit its findings to the National Council, which will take a final decision on the matter.

Reacting to this, the former deputy minister said the ongoing disciplinary process goes beyond the individual concerned and could significantly influence grassroots morale and public confidence in the party ahead of the 2028 elections.

"Whatever gets decided in the coming days won't just affect Kennedy. It will ripple into party unity, grassroots morale, and how much confidence the public still has in us heading into 2028," he wrote in a social media post on Friday, June 26.

Dr. Ampaabeng noted that the issue has generated intense discussions within the party and on social media platforms, especially following recent tensions among supporters and reports of clashes during the NEC meeting on Thursday.

He described Kennedy Agyapong as a political figure who enjoys support beyond the traditional party structures and argued that his influence among young people, business owners and ordinary Ghanaians should be considered an asset to the party.

"Strip away the personalities, the insults, the petitions, the egos, and the media point scoring, and what's left is the real job: bringing our base back together, rebuilding public trust, and putting up a credible, united front for 2028," he stated.

According to the former deputy minister, the NPP should focus on rebuilding public trust and holding the government accountable rather than becoming consumed by internal divisions and factional disagreements.

He further urged the party's leadership to consider the sacrifices made by ordinary supporters across the country when taking decisions on the matter.
