PRINPAG condemns high court jailing of Herald Newspaper editor Larry Dogbe

The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has expressed concern over the conviction and sentencing of journalist Larry Alans Dogbe, Managing Editor of The Herald Newspaper, by an Accra High Court in a contempt case involving businessman Kevin Okyere and Petraco SA.

In a statement signed by PRINPAG President, David Tamakloe on June 25, 2026, PRINPAG said it had taken note of the court’s ruling, which found Mr. Dogbe guilty of contempt of court, and described the sentence as harsh, unreasonable, and disproportionate.

The association argued that the decision raises serious concerns, particularly in relation to issues surrounding substituted service, disputed notice, and constitutional protections for journalists as enshrined in Articles 162 and 165 of the 1992 Constitution.

PRINPAG stressed that Mr. Dogbe is a senior journalist whose work has contributed significantly to public interest journalism in Ghana, adding that it is engaging his legal team to explore all available legal remedies, including possible appeal processes.

According to the association, the case sets a worrying precedent for media freedom and responsible journalism in the country.

While reaffirming its respect for the rule of law, PRINPAG maintained that journalists should not be subjected to punitive sanctions for carrying out their constitutional duty of informing the public, especially on issues relating to public accountability and resource management.

The association said it will continue to monitor developments in the case and will provide updates to the media and the public as necessary.
