Military personnel have been deployed to Bawku Senior High School following a violent disturbance by students that led to the destruction of school property and the assault of a teacher.
The incident reportedly occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Monday, June 15, when some students went on a rampage, causing significant damage to facilities on the school campus.
Confirming the incident, the Bawku Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Isaac Abweko Azasoo, said the unrest was triggered after school authorities resisted attempts by some final-year students to engage in examination malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to Mr. Azasoo, the situation escalated into violence, during which the students allegedly abducted one teacher, while another was physically assaulted and sustained injuries.
The injured teacher was initially taken to a nearby health facility for treatment before being referred to Bolgatanga for further medical care.
Mr. Azasoo explained that military personnel were subsequently deployed to the school to restore calm and prevent any further breakdown of law and order.
“The military was brought in to prevent any further escalation of the situation and to ensure the safety of staff and students,” he stated.
Authorities are yet to complete an assessment of the extent of damage caused to school property during the disturbance.
No arrests have been announced so far, while investigations are expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible for the destruction and attacks.
The development has raised concerns about discipline and security in schools, particularly during examination periods when tensions among students can be heightened.
