Ghana and Germany Launch PSInno Programme in Tamale to Boost SMEs, Innovation and Job Creation

The Governments of Ghana and Germany have officially launched the Private Sector and Innovation Promotion (PSInno) Programme in Tamale, aimed at strengthening small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), fostering innovation, and creating sustainable employment opportunities, particularly in northern Ghana.

The initiative, commissioned by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is being implemented in partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry.

The programme is designed to support agribusiness development in northern Ghana while promoting the growth of the digital economy nationwide, with a strong focus on empowering women-led and youth-led enterprises.

Speaking at the launch, the Director of SME Development at the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Cynthia Djokoto, stressed that Ghana’s economic transformation depends on building a more competitive and resilient private sector. She noted that innovation and entrepreneurship must be driven by people, particularly those in northern Ghana, to ensure inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

The German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederik Landshöft, described the launch as a testament to the enduring partnership between Ghana and Germany. He reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Ghana through technical assistance, financial cooperation, and institutional partnerships aimed at promoting sustainable development and economic resilience.

Representing the Northern Regional Minister, the Director of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, Mr. Sumaila Ewuntomah, expressed appreciation to the German Government for introducing the programme. He urged stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to actively support its implementation to maximize its impact and create more opportunities for businesses and young people across the region.

Under the programme, more than 1,100 companies are expected to benefit from targeted support by 2028. The initiative is also projected to create nearly 2,000 jobs, many of which will be concentrated in northern Ghana.

The launch brought together government officials, development partners, private sector leaders and startup founders to explore strategies for advancing innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive economic growth in Ghana.
