Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has raised questions about the intense desire among aspiring politicians to secure parliamentary seats, which has led to fierce competition and even conflict.

During a visit by Speaker of Parliament Alban S.K. Bagbin to the Manhyia Palace on Sunday 30 June 2024, the Asantehene sought to understand why individuals are willing to endure insults to become Members of Parliament.

“Why is it that today everyone desires to go to Parliament? What is there that people are willing to endure insults and assault each other just to secure a seat there?,” Otumfuo quizzed.

He continued that: “We all want to understand. Governance is about earning the mandate to make meaningful changes. As an MP aspirant, without a budget, how can you promise to construct roads or build schools? Your role is to tell your people that when you get to Parliament, you will represent them and make laws to move the country forward.”

Speaker Bagbin's visit to the Manhyia Palace was part of a three-day official tour of the Ashanti Region, marking the 30th anniversary of the Fourth Republic.

The tour aims to celebrate the enduring stability and progress of Ghana's democratic governance.
