Health Breast cancer: Breast Care International sensitizes Mancell Vocational SHS students
THU, 27 JUN 2024 LISTEN

Breast Care International (BCI) has provided breast cancer education to students at Mancell Vocational SHS in the Oforikrom municipality of the Ashanti region.

The students were educated on the possible causes, prevention, and treatment of breast cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women globally.

This initiative is part of BCI's ongoing efforts to raise and maintain awareness of breast cancer among Ghanaian secondary school students.

In addition to the educational session, free clinical breast cancer screenings were conducted for the students and staff of the school.

The President of BCI, Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, led a team from the Peace and Love Hospital to the school on Monday, June 26, 2024.

The medical staff demonstrated how to perform Breast Self-Examination (BSE) correctly to the students.

Breast cancer survivors also shared their experiences with the students, offering hope that the disease is treatable and survivable.

Addressing the students, Dr. Wiafe Addai urged them to equip themselves with the knowledge gained and to spread the message in their communities.

"After this education, you will become ambassadors of the breast cancer campaign, and you must be able to change the perception that the disease is caused by witchcraft," she added.

Dr. Wiafe Addai also advised the students to seek medical attention promptly if they notice anything unusual in their breasts, emphasizing that breast cancer is preventable, treatable, and curable when detected early. She stressed the importance of regular medical check-ups.

The headmistress of Mancell Vocational SHS, Lydia Osei Owusu, expressed gratitude for the timely breast cancer education. She stated that the knowledge gained would help students spread awareness in their communities, ultimately helping to minimize the spread of the disease.

Madam Lydia Osei Owusu requested that BCI make this an annual program to continually educate students about breast cancer.
