Nana Ofori Owusu, Chairman of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), has called for the abolition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), arguing that it contributes to streetism and does not benefit Ghana's education system.

Speaking during the "Kokrokoo" panel discussion on Peace FM, Nana Ofori Owusu questioned the necessity of the BECE for students at the basic education level.

He emphasized that compelling students to write the BECE at that young age is detrimental.

"We have to be very serious with our education. The way our education system is going, it is not doing us any good. It creates streetism," he said.

He further stressed, "You must abolish it. It is of no value."

Nana Ofori Owusu's comments come amid uncertainty surrounding this year's BECE, due to the government's debt owed the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The government owes WAEC over 90 million cedis, and there are concerns that the examination may not proceed if 50 percent of this debt is not paid.

Reports indicate that WAEC has received only GH¢2.3 million out of the GH¢95.83 million needed to organize the exams scheduled to begin on July 8 and end on July 15.

Despite these financial challenges, WAEC's Public Relations Officer, John Kapi, assured the public in an interview on "Kokrokoo" with Kwami Sefa Kayi days ago that the examination would take place as planned.

“We have done the preparations...We can indeed do it. The printing and stationery are all ready,” Kapi said.
