The 2024 parliamentary candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana to consider extending the ongoing limited voter registration exercise at university campuses.

The limited registration exercise began on May 7 and is scheduled to conclude on May 20.

However, in a post on X on Thursday, May 9, Mr. Dumelo argued that the period should be extended, particularly at campuses in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, due to technical challenges encountered in the initial days of registration.

In his post, the NDC candidate stated: "To uphold fairness, the Electoral Commission should contemplate extending the registration period at our university campuses, particularly in Ayawaso West, in light of the technical challenges encountered during the initial days.”

The actor-cum-politician stressed: “It's crucial to ensure our students receive fair treatment, as many were unable to register due to EC system failures.”

The call comes as reports emerged of numerous eligible voters facing difficulties registering during the early days of the exercise.

Long queues were witnessed at various registration centres as technical glitches were said to have slowed down the registration process.

Meanwhile, the election management body in a statement on Tuesday noted that the issues were resolved in many centres by midday and promised improved exercise in the days ahead.
