Ghanaian journalist Umaru Sanda Amadu has expressed concerns over potential widespread job losses following the announcement that food delivery platform Glovo will be ceasing operations in Ghana.

In a post on social media platform X on Monday, May 6, Sanda lamented the impact of Glovo's planned exit from the local market.

"Glovo's exit means all the boys I see riding bikes in town to make ends meet will be jobless! Sad!" Sanda wrote.

He urges the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to sit up and deliver on its campaign promises.

“Dear NPP, your 2016 Manifesto was titled 'An Agenda For Jobs'. Please sit up. This is scary,” the post concludes.

Sanda's comments come after Glovo notified its restaurant partners via email that it will stop operating in Ghana effective May 10.

The Spanish startup said it was a "difficult decision" to redirect resources towards other global markets where it has a stronger footing.

As one of Ghana's largest delivery platforms, Glovo had partnerships with over 200 local restaurants and employed many youths as delivery riders.
