The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is seeking to prevent the rise of independent candidates amongst its ranks ahead of the December 7, polls.

NPP National Chairman Stephen Ntim expressed this desire at a rally in Ejisu on Sunday, April 28, aimed at drumming up support for the party's candidate Kwabena Boateng.

"I do not want issues of independent candidature to plague our party," Ntim stated. He urged voters to cast their ballot for Boateng instead of independent candidate Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, a former NPP MP.

Mr. Ntim acknowledged that independent candidates running against official party candidates have often been close NPP members.

However, he reassured supporters that the national leadership will work to resolve internal disputes if Boateng is elected.

"And it is obvious that such individuals are closest members of our great party. But I can assure you that when Kwabena Boateng is elected MP for Ejisu our national leadership will ensure that all internal issues in the various constituencies will be resolved," Ntim stressed.

Hundreds of NPP supporters gathered for Boateng's final campaign rallies across Ejisu ahead of Tuesday's by-election.

The contest is seen as a key test for the party as it defends the seat which became vacant following late John Kumah’s demise, amid reports of dissatisfaction amongst some members.
