Retired Police officer, Peter Lanchene Toobu has condemned the joint operation of the National Security and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in Garu and Tempane Districts over the weekend.

Speaking to TV3 in an interview, Peter Lanchene Toobu who is also the current Member of Parliament for Wa West, said he is surprised the National Security is now venturing into operations.

He argued that the National Security is not an operation agent and must not be seen embarking on such activities.

Peter Lanchene Toobu said once National Security engages in operations, it messes up the country’s entire security structure.

“What happened in Garu cannot be anything that will encourage people in uniform, it cannot encourage anybody in the security sector. The security sector is well structured. National Security is central to the success of security in this country as much as they play the lead role of coordination. National Security is not an operational agent, let us get it right.

“If National Security veers into operation, they mess up the whole structure,” Peter Lanchene Toobu explained.

The retired Policeman continued, “National Security has to superintend over the intelligence of this country, analyze information, arrive at an intelligence position and decide that this is an action that requires the Police to step in, this is a situation that requires the Ghana Armed Forces to step in, this is a situation that requires the Immigration to step in.

“At that material moment, National Security is deemed to be playing that revolving role. But if you have men and women who say they are from national security taking up operational roles to the point that they get into the system to attack, it is surprising.”

Following the joint operation by the National Security Ministry and the Ghana Armed Forces, several people were arrested.

Innocent civilians were dragged from their rooms and given severe beatings.

The operation occurred on the back of an attack on some National Security personnel by a group of irate youth in Garu.
