Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa North, James Agalga has expressed concern about the viral audio of a police commissioner plotting the sacking of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

In a lengthy audio that has gone viral on social media, a man said to be a Police Commissioner is heard discussing with a politician the need to sack the current IGP to help the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rig the 2024 elections.

According to James Agalga who formerly served as Deputy Minister for the Interior, the police officer in the viral audio needs to be charged with treason for his comments.

The Ranking Member on the Interior and Defense Committee insists that the secret recording of the purported plot to get rid of the IGP must not be taken for granted as it threatens the 2024 general elections.

“Until now I’ve never known we have NPP IGPs, NDC IGPs. I’ve never known that. What I know is that IGPs are supposed to be professionals, they rise through the rank, and if there is a vacancy the President exercises his power to appoint the IGP.

“The said officer needs to be seriously interrogated and if it’s the authenticity of that audio is established then he must be charged. The actions of the one behind that audio for me pass for treason and this matter must be dealt with as such. It’s an attempt to subvert the will of the Ghanaian people in 2024. Such conduct can compromise the security of our country,” James Agalga said.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Ambrose Dery has also reacted to the viral audio.

Speaking to the media in Parliament, he said IGP George Akuffo Dampare has done a great job and not going anywhere.
