Popular Ghanaian musician and rapper Maradona Yeboah Adjei, known by his stage name Guru, has thrown his hat in the ring for the upcoming University of Ghana Student Representative Council (SRC) presidential elections.

Guru, who is currently pursuing a degree in Political Science and Information Studies at UG, took to social media on Thursday to announce his candidacy.

In a poster shared on his accounts, he welcomed students back to campus and declared himself as the UGSRC presidential hopeful for 2024, with the hashtag #BuildingTheSRCWithEveryoneForEveryone.

In an interview earlier this year, Guru revealed that attending the University of Ghana had long been his dream.

He said he worked hard to maintain a good Grade Point Average (GPA) so that he would be eligible to contest SRC positions.

“I was staying on the low to better my GPA. Because, before you can stand for any competition, you need to be inclined with whatever is happening on campus, especially your GPA should be up. So basically, now I have a CGPA of 3.88. So with that, I can still contest, okay. So that's what I'm doing," Guru stated.

The musician also said he has been actively involved with the SRC in the past, helping to sponsor hall weeks and working on projects.

“The University of Ghana has always been my dream and being there feels like a dream come true. And I was willing to do everything for them...I helped in doing with the Evandi Hall Week Celebration. I was able to bring Mr Drew and co and it worked so well," he asserted.

If elected, Guru says he hopes to do more for the university while pursuing his degree, with the goal of one day working for the United Nations, as he has aspired to since childhood.
