Ghana Post accounts officer in court over GH¢87,000

Adjei Manu, an accounts officer of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Post, who was arrested in September for allegedly embezzling monies belonging to the company has appeared in court to defend the charges against him.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Circuit Court Judge, His Honour Mr. Adjei Frimpong, asked the accused person on Thursday to engage the services of a lawyer since he (the accused) could not defend the case single-handedly taking into consideration the matter in question.
According to him, even though it is not mandatory for one to engage the services of a lawyer to pursue a case in the court, he believed that Mr. Adjei Manu should take a counsel before the case is heard.
"It is not compulsory for one to engage the services of a lawyer but you must take a lawyer so that if you lose this case you lose honourably," he said jokingly.
It would be recalled that The Chronicle on Friday September 11th, this year, carried a front page story with the caption "Police arrest Ghana Post Accountant ... for misappropriating GH¢20,000".
The story also quoted the Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Post, Mr. J. Y. Yamoah as saying "the said amount could either be lesser or greater depending on the outcome of the investigation of the case".
The accused who pleaded not guilty had admitted during police enquiries during investigation and interrogation that he used the money to build a house for himself.
It was also disclosed that the amount in question was rather GH¢87,000 after the investigations.
Hearing has been adjourned to November 16, 2009.
