The Literacy Drive Charity Ball held by Promoting Global Learning (PGL) in conjunction with Universal Learning Solutions (ULS) and The Voice Newspaper was a night of outstanding elegance and philanthropy. The gala which took place on Saturday, 6th of February 2016 at the Jumeirah Carlton Hotel, London, had the aim of improving literacy rates in Ghana and the rest of Africa.
Guiding the audience through the night’s programme was Sky News correspondent Afua Hirsch and Sports and Features Editor for the Voice Newspaper- Rodney Hinds. The duo led the proceedings on the night - reiterating the need for support in improving educational standards in Ghana. The first beneficiaries of the proposed mobile libraries will be the Upper West Akim District.
In attendance were dignitaries and celebrities including HE Victor Smith - the Ghana High Commissioner to the UK and Northern Ireland, Hugh Quarshie of Holby City, Bianca Miller (Apprentice Finalist) and Joe Slater of Waterloo Road.
Jermain Jackman, 2014 winner of The BBC talent show The Voice electrified the atmosphere with his rendition of the Nina Simon classic – ‘Feeling Good’ amongst four other songs. He also asserted that we have the power “to change the lives of children.”
HE Victor Smith gave the keynote speech. Henry Yentumi, co-founder of PGL made an emotional appeal in which he recalled how the fortunes of his family had been transformed through the power of education. He concluded with the call to action “Together, let us rise to the challenge of funding global education.”
The wonderful ambience of the Jumeirah Carlton Hotel coupled with the live music and delightful 3 course meal made for a memorable night. Generous funds were raised which will go towards the provision of much needed learning resources for school children in Ghana.
