NUGS appeal to TEWU leadership, FUSAG to exercise restraint

Accra, Nov. 19, GNA - The leadership of National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) on Thursday appealed to members of Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and the Federation of University Staff Association of Ghana (FUSAG) to exercise restraint in solving challenges affecting them.

The appeal was contained in a statement issued in Accra and signed by Mr Robert Dela Mawuenyegah, Press and Information Secretary, NUGS.

It said: "Indeed, NUGS acknowledges that so far as the challenges of TEWU and FUSAG should be addressed, it should be done in a manner that would not affect the academic calendar and studies of tertiary students in Ghana".

The statement said that the strike action by TEWU and FUSAG members had compelled the closure and use of some academic facilities at some public universities.

"Workers at the universities have virtually laid down their tools with the hope that government listens to their concerns," it said.

The statement said tertiary students were preparing feverishly towards their end of semester examinations from Saturday, November 21, and this strike action should no way affect them negatively.

It called on government and the University authorities to expedite action to resolve the concerns and not at the expense of innocent Ghanaian students.

"NUGS wish to indicate that Ghanaian students may not forgive TEWU, FUSAG and government or the university authorities should their actions affect them adversely. It is also our prayer and hope that the activities on all campuses would be calm without any tension for the smooth continuation of academic work," the statement said.
