‘Move on to become the next Pope’

The Paramount Chief of Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, has urged Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson to move on to become the next Pope for the Catholic Church.

According to him, the Cardinal's new position as the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace at the Vatican can testify to the fact that Africans can also do better.

Osabarima Kwesi Atta gave these words of encouragement to the Cardinal when hundreds of Catholics and residents of Cape Coast took him to his palace to greet and inform him of his new position.

Osabarima Kwesi Atta indicated that Cardinal's position has brought dignity to Africans particularly Ghanaians and therefore encouraged the youth to emulate him.

He stated that he and his sub-chiefs were happy when they heard the news since Cardinal is from the region and has made the people of Cape Coast very proud.

Osabarima Kwesi Atta charged Cardinal Appiah Turkson to continue to serve the Lord with truth and obedience until he gets to the greater height as a Pope.

“I only need you to become the next Pope since the region has been able to produce great people in Africa such as Mr Kofi Annan, the former UN secretary, John Mensah Sarbah, Mr De-Graft Johnson among others who are all indigenes of Cape Coast,” he added.

He revealed that the traditional council would fix a date to honour him before he leaves to Rome. He was decorated with a white cloth and a palm frond to signify his victory.

On his part, Cardinal Appiah Turkson thanked the chiefs and the clergy for honouring him and promised to discharge his duties diligently to enhance the image of Africans as well as the people in the region.

He also promised to use his new office to promote peace and justice in the world. He used the occasion to pray for peace for the chiefs and people in the area.

Cardinal Appiah Turkson was accompanied by the Archbishop of Accra, Palmer Buckle, the Archbishop of Kumasi Diocese, Bishop Akwasi Sarpong and other Bishops of both the Anglican and Catholic churches in the region.
