THE MAIN opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), at its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting last Thursday, unanimously confirmed, Mr. Dan Kweku Botwe, the party's legislator for the Okere Constituency in the Eastern Region, as Director of Strategy for Campaigns for the NPP.

In the party's attempt to whip up party members to come together and strategize for a winning formula for the 2012 general elections, the leadership of the NPP indicated that Mr. Botwe, also a former General Secretary of the party, has the potential to work in the larger interest of the party.

Though such a position has been provided in the party's constitution, the position was left vacant until the National Executive Committee (NEC), at its meeting, zeroed the position on the legislator, who is already serving as the Chairman of the Strategic Committee for the NPP parliamentary caucus.

Mr. Dan Botwe, who is affectionately called, Dan, told The Chronicle that though the responsibility was an onerous task, he would work with his team to achieve the desire dream of the party.

According to him, he would ensure that the party explored all means to galvanise more support for the party towards 2012 and other elections.

The Okere Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) hinted that campaign for every political party begins immediately after elections.

“It is about having the links with the people, and making sure that the party comes back in 2012,” he said.

Sections of the party members this reporter spoke to applauded the decision of the NEC to assign such a responsibility to Mr. Botwe.

According to them, even though it was too late, the current position of the former General Secretary would help transmogrify the party into a winnable one.

At the crucial NEC meeting last Thursday, the leadership resolved, among other issues, that the presidential slot should be whittled down to two, to avoid acrimony, as witnessed in their last congress, with over 17 contestants.

The party has also agreed on the proposal to endorse the expansion of the Electoral College to also avoid manipulation, and has fixed August 8, this year, to organise their conference to consider all the proposals.

Meanwhile, the decision of the NEC to narrow the presidential slot to two has been shot down by Dr. Arthur Kennedy, a defeated presidential candidate.

He argued that it was not right for the leadership to narrow it to that number, and said if it were to be increased to at least four or five, it would have been better.
