DVLA licenses four companies to inspect vehicles

The Driver Vehicle and License Authority (DVLA) has licensed four private companies to assist in assessing and inspecting the road worthiness of vehicles on the road.

The four companies are Engineering and Transport Service LTD at Weija, the BIVAC Ghana International at Kotonase, Veto Services LTD at Dome and Bensam Auto Company LTD at Oyibi under construction. Briefing the Media in Accra, the Former Media Consultant to the Ministry of Transport, Mr. Ken Anku, added that “once we are taking care of our roads and educating drivers, we must have competent and efficient facilities to be able to inspect the road worthiness of the vehicles.”

He noted that the DVLA law has been amended to take care of the out-sourcing of the Vehicle Inspection function of DVLA to private companies. This he said was in line with the Private Partnership Agreement. Mr. Anku therefore called on the companies to provide quality services to help reduce the current road accidents in the country.

He pointed out that in 2007, the previous government advertised for companies which were interested in providing inspection services in the transport sectors and the four companies submitted their bid and won the contract to execute the project.

On a facility visit to the four companies, the Executive Director of BIVAC Ghana International, Mr. Lea Barbar, who conducted some journalists around his company, said the company would help the DVLA to provide quality and timely services to the general public.

According to him, it has been six months now since they started work, but because it has not been commissioned, they offer free inspection services to the general public.

He disclosed that it takes a maximum time of 17minutes to inspect a vehicle, irrespective of its size. During inspecting, Mr. Barbar said if there should be any defect on the vehicles, the clients would be quickly alerted and given a slip role, where all defects on the vehicle would be shown.
