Chieftaincy disputes remains one of the major threats to Ghana’s peace — National Peace Council

President of the National Peace Council (NPC) Reverend Dr Ernest Adu-Gyamfi says chieftaincy disputes remains one of the major threats to Ghana’s peace.

He said the council is currently mediating 457 cases of chieftaincy disputes across the country.

According to him, most of the disputes bothers on sale of land to multiple individuals, land litigations between two or more chiefs, chieftaincy succession litigations among others.

Rev Adu-Gyamfi said this when he joined the Kingsway Baptist Church at Buokrom in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region on Sunday April 28 2024 to mark their 40 years anniversary.

Speaking to this Reporter, the NPC Chairperson appealed to traditional authorities in the country to help in resolving the rising and disturbing cases of chieftaincy disputes for unity and social cohesion to prevail.

He explained many of these disputes had lingered on for a long time, regretting that the number of the disputes kept increasing and may undermine national security.

“Living the disputes unresolved only make them degenerate and become threats to peace if they escalate and eventually undermine development of the region, hence the NPC has dedicated more time for such litigations to be resolved," he said.

Rev Adu-Gyamfi has therefore, appealed to the feuding factions in the disputed paramountcies to endeavour to bury their differences and cooperate with the relevant stakeholders towards finding lasting solutions to the disputes to build and strengthen family ties.
