Don't travel to volatile regions in northern Mali — Ministry of Foreign Affair to Ghanaians

The Ghanaian government has advised citizens to avoid non-essential travel to parts of northern Mali, citing serious security threats in the Gao and Ansongo regions.

In a travel advisory issued on Friday, April 26, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration warned of increased risks along major highways linking Mali and Niger in the volatile northern areas.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration cognisant of the recent security development along the major highways linking Mali and Niger, particularly the Gao and Ansongo Regions of Northern Mali wishes to advice the travelling public to avoid travel along that route as there has been reports of terrorists harassment of commuters who ply the routes," the statement reads.

The advisory comes amid reports that terrorist groups have been confronting and threatening civilians using the highways between Gao, Ansongo and neighboring Niger.

With ongoing militant activity and an unstable security situation, the risks to Ghanaian travelers are considered too high.

The ministry emphasized that it “remains committed to the safety of Ghanaians and will provide updates on the security situation in the region under reference in due course. The Ministry further urges the Ghanaian public to always prioritise their safety when travelling."
