Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, has stated that he won’t apologise to the Regional Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Mark Asomani-Wiafe.

Workers of ECG in the Ashanti Region have protested against Mr. Osei-Mensah for having the ECG Regional Minister arrested.

The workers who wore red to work on Thursday have demanded an apology from the Ashanti Regional Minister and warned of consequences.

However, addressing the media on the matter, Simon Osei-Mensah has stressed that he was only doing his job as Chairman of the Security Council in the region when he caused the arrest of the ECG boos and won’t apologise for it.

“I asked the Police to invite Ing Mark Asomani-Wiafe on security grounds because of the happenings on power issue in the region. And the fact that a task force can always come from outside to embark on disconnection exercises without proper information.

“Again, one of the other reasons why I decided that the manager is invited to write a statement is the unfortunate situation that happened for which bolts and nuts holding the metal frame to the concrete pillar for eight pylons were removed. We invited ECG to the Regional Security Council to look at the issue, but they failed to honour the invitation,” the Ashanti Regional Minister explained.

Simon Osei-Mensah added, “Also, I’ve requested for information from ECG for planned and unplanned maintenance schedules and regional distribution of GRIDCo shortfalls, but they never attended to my request.

The Minister also told the media that although he has informed ECG that where the President and Vice President lodge anytime they’re in Kumasi is declared a security zone, the ECG has refused to oblige.

These reasons he explained are why he involved the police.
