Court withdraws bench warrant for arrest of CID Director General

The High Court in Accra has rescinded the bench warrant it issued for the arrest of the Director Generals of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Legal and Prosecution unit of the Ghana Police Service.

The Court on Monday issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the two top Police officials for failing to appear before the Court for Contempt.

In a quick response, the leadership of the Ghana Police Service through Superintendent Sylvester Asare, the head of the Legal and Prosecution run to court to apologise for the inability of the two top officials to show up in Court previously.

“Respectfully my lady, first and foremost, I humbly want to render an unqualified apology for and on behalf of the Respondents (Director Generals of CID and Legal and Prosecution) for their inability to appear before this Court as directed by the Court which warranted the issuance of a bench warrant.

“I want to bring it to the notice of this court that it is not the intention of the Respondents herein to disobey the orders of this court. In fact, it has never been the characteristic of the Respondents at all, saved to say that, the Respondents never had notice of proceedings in this court. Therefore, we apologise for the mix-up,” Superintendent Sylvester Asare said.

With the apology accepted by the court, the bench warrant issued for the arrest of the Director Generals of the Criminal Investigation Department and the Legal and Prosecution unit of the Ghana Police Service has been rescinded.

Justice Lydia Osei Marfo admonished the Police Service to uphold the rule of law at all times.

She cautioned that if they fail to uphold the rule of law by disrespecting the orders of the court, they would be called to order.
